ประวัติพระอุปคุต

   พระอุปคต  ผู้เป็นพระอรหันตสาวกที่ทรงมหิทธานุภาพ  ชอบความวิเวกวังเวงและอยู่ตามลำพังผู้เดียว ไม่ชอบเกี่ยวข้องกับผู้อื่น  เป็นพระอรหันต์หลังสมัยพุทธกาลเพราะไม่พบประวัติของท่านในพระไตรปิฏก  แต่ปรากฎอยู่ในจารึกพระอโศกมหาราช  ซึ่งเขียนขึ้นเมื่อร้อยกว่าปีหลังพุทธปรินิพพาน และปรากฎอยู่ในพระปฐมสมโพธิกถา ซึ่งเป็นพระนิพนธ์กรมสมเด็จพระปรมานุชิตชิโนรส โดยอยู่ปริจเฉทที่ 28 ที่มีชื่อว่า "มารพันธปริวรรต"  เรื่ิองชื่อของท่านนั้นนอกจากจะเรียกว่า "พระอุปคุตเถระ"แล้ว ยังมีชื่อเรียกเป็นอย่างอื่นอีก เช่น "พระเถรอุปคุต" ชื่อนี้เรียกเป็นภาษาชาวบ้านโดยนำเอาคำว่า "เถระ" อันเป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่ชี้บอกถึง"ความมั่นคง" ในพระธรรมวินัย หรือ บวชพระครองเพศสมณะมาแล้วตั้งแต่ 10 พรรษาขึ้นไป

    "พระนาคอุปคุต" ชื่อนี้ใช้เรียกเพื่อกันมิให้ซ้ำกับชื่อของพระเถระรูปอื่นและมีความหมายว่า  พระอุึปคุตผู้ประเสริฐ

   "พระกีสนาคอุปคุต"  ชื่อนี้เป็นชื่อเต็มที่เรียกตามนิมิตหมายแห่งร่างกายของท่าน คือ ท่านเป็นผู้มีร่างกายซูปผอม (กีสะ แปลว่า ผอมหรือบอบบาง)
   และอีกชื่อหนึ่งซึ่งซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักกันดีในหมู่ของนักเลงพระคือ "พระบัวเข็ม" หรือ "หลวงพ่อบัวเข็ม" ชื่อนี้เรียกกันเป็นภาษาไทยและเหตุที่เรียกอย่างนี้ เพราะว่ามีใบบัวคลุมศรีษะและมีเข็มปักอยู่ตามส่วนต่างๆของร่างกายท่าน

   แต่ชื่อของท่านที่ใช้เรียกันอยู่โดยทั่วไปนิยมเรียกเพีียงสั้นๆว่่า  พระอุปคุต เป็นศัพท์ทางภาษาบาลี หรือ พระอุปคุปต์ เป็นศัพท์ทางภาษาบาลี หรือ พระอุปคุปต์ เป็นภาษาสันสกฤต โดยทั้งสองชื่อมีความหมายว่า ผู้มีความคุ้มครองมั่นคง

   พุทธพยากรณ์
  กล่าวกันว่า....ก่อนพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าเสด็จดับขันธปรินิพานพระองค์ได้มีพราะพุทธดำรกับพระอานนท์ว่า
    "ดูกร  อานนท์ ณ นครมถุราอีกร้อยปีแต่แต่ตถาคตนิพพานแล้ว จะมีคนขายน้ำหอม ชื่อ คุปตะ เข้าจะมีลูกชื่อ อุปคุต ซึ่งจะได้เป็นอนุพุทธที่ปราศจากมหาปุริสลักษณะ ท่านผู้นี้จะทำงานของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าต่อไป เทศนาของท่านผู้นี้จะทำงานของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าต่อไป เทศนาของผู้นี้จะช่วยให้พระภิกษุเป็นอันมาก เอาชนะกิเลสมารได้จนเข้าถึงอรหัตตผล..... นอกจากนี้แ้ล้วพระอุปคุตรูปนี้จะเป็นเอตทัคคะในบรรดาธรรมกถึกทั้งหลายของเรา
    อานนท์  เธอแลเห็นสั้นยาวสีคล้ำทางสุดสายตาโน้นไหม  นั่นแล อานนท์คือภูเขาชื่อ อุรุมมุณฑะ อีกร้ยปีแตาตถาคตนิพพานแล้วพระภิกษุรูปหนึ่งชื่อ อุรุมมุณฑะ อีกร้อยปีแต่ตถาคตนิพพานแล้วพระภิกษุรูปหนึ่งชื่อ ศาณกวาสิน จะให้สร้างวัดขึ้นที่นั่นแล้วจะให้อุปสบทแก่อุปคต.....

กำเนิดอุปคุต
    ร้อยปีเศษหลังพุทธปรินิพพาน  เมื่อพระศาณกวาสินเถระให้สร้างวัดบนภูเขาอุรุมมุณฑะเสร็จแล้ว ท่านระลึกได้ว่าเคยมีพุทธพยากรณ์ว่า จะมีพระอุปคุตได้เป็นพระอนุพุทธด และจะได้ประกอบกรณียกิจของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า  พระคุณเจ้าจึงได้กำหนดจิตดูว่า พ่อค้าน้ำหอมที่ชื่อว่า คุปตะ ได้ถือกำเนิดหรือยังและแล้วก็ปรากฏแก่ญาณว่าเขาได้เกิดแล้ว พระคุณเจ้าจึงกำหนดจิตต่อไปว่าบุตรของเขาที่ชื่อว่าอุปคุตถือกำเนิดหรือยังก็ปรากฏว่าเขายังไม่เกิด
     ด้วยกุศโลบายภาย ในไม่ช้า คุปตะพ่อค้าน้ำหอมก็มานับถือพระธรรมของพระผู้มีพระภาค วันหนึ่งพระศาณกวาสินจึงไปสู่คฤกาสน์ของเขาพร้อมด้วยพระภิกษุสงฆ์หมู่ใหญ่ วันต่อมาพระศาณกวาสินไปกับพระภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง ครั้นวันที่สามพระคุณเจ้าไปเพียงลำพังคุปตะเห็นดังนั้นจึงถามว่าทำไมท่านมาเพียงลำพัง
     พระเณรเจ้าตอบว่าท่านชราภาพแล้ว  แต่ไม่มีผู้อุปัฎฐากผุ้ติดตามคุปตะตอบว่าเขายังยินดีในกามคุณทั้งห้า ไม่สมควรที่จะออกบวช แต่เมื่อมีบุตรแล้วจะถวายบุตรให้เป็นผู้อุปัฎฐากพระคุณเจ้า

   ต่อมาคุปตะได้บุตรชาย 2 คน คืออุศวคุปต์ และ ธนคุปต์ ก็ยังไม่ยอมให้บวชอ้างว่า คนโตต้องไปหาซื้อของจากเมืองไกล คนที่สองต้องคอยเฝ้าบ้าน ถ้ามีคนที่สามจะถวายพระคุณเจ้า พระศาณกวาสินกำหนดจิต รู้ว่าเด็ก 2 คนนี้ไม่ใช่ จึงรอบุตรคนที่3
